Pollen allergies, also called hay fever have been known for a long time but in today’s stressful environment it seems that more and more people suffer from allergies. Often it is difficult to identify the exact source. Specific pollen allergies may be avoided by changing one’s environment. Desensitization with established Western medical methods (subcutaneous injections of pollen extracts) are slow and generally have only a temporary effect, so they need to be repeated. Traditional and alternative health practitioners have claimed to cure pollen allergies.

It is said that the consumption of locally produced honey has a desensitizing effect because all honeys contain small quantities of pollen. However, not all available pollen species are collected by bees and thus may not occur in the particular honey.

There is not even anecdotal evidence that honey consumption will remedy pollen allergies, but consuming small quantities of honey regularly has not harmed anyone yet. The consumption of pressed honey which always has a very high pollen content, may at times cause small allergic reactions (personal experience) Feinberg et al., (1940) have shown in numerous comparisons that pollen consumption only marginally improved allergic reactions, so marginally in fact that it cannot be recommended, nor can improvements be distinguished from improvements possibly due to general improvements in health.

The greatest risk of allergic reactions exists with the direct consumption of pollen. This, however, can be avoided by consuming pollen packed in capsules or coated pills which prevent direct contact with any mucous membranes. Once in the digestive tract, the body generally does not show any allergic reaction. Again, careful trials by sensitive individuals are recommended if consumption is assisted upon.

This preempts any foods in which pollen has been incorporated, but allows taking pollen for special health reasons. Barrionuevo (1983) and personal trials by the author, who is strongly allergic to some pollen species, confirmed that by avoiding contact with eyes, nose, mouth, throat and pharynx, no allergic reactions occurred with ingested pollen. Intestinal allergies to pollen are rarer than most food allergies (Schmidt and Buchmann, 1992). Still, careful trials by sensitive individuals are recommended for all products containing pollen.

Since there are so many different substances in the different pollen species to which people react with allergies, only some extractions or a general denaturalization can inactivate most of the allergens for commercial production. This probably ruins some of the beneficial characteristics of the pollen as well. Getting pollen from areas without the allergy-causing species may help individuals who want to consume pollen, but such identification and separation is unlikely to be feasible for commercial production.

A simple muscle resistance test (kinesiology) can show allergic sensitivities before actual contact with the substance occurs. As a precaution, everybody, even those people who have not known any pollen allergies before, should first try very small quantities of the pollen or the product containing the pollen. Allergic reactions normally occur within a short period of time, from a few minutes to a few hours.

To avoid any problems with customers and with those who consume foods or use cosmetics and medicine-like products containing pollen, it would be advisable to include a warning on the product label, for example “This product contains pollen which may cause allergic reactions. Try small quantities first”.

Pollen should not be collected or purchased from areas with heavy industrial, urban or agricultural pollution (pesticide). The geographical origin of the pollen should be known, and producers as well as buyers and retailers should be using adequate cold storage.

Bee Pollen Supplement for Children Developed in India

Now your child would have more nutritious, still delicious supplementary food, highly rich in protein. City-based Central Bee Research and Training Institute (CBRTI), is seeking commercial production of Bee Pollen – a valuable product collected by honey bees. The product, in the form of capsules, is awaiting green signal from Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The in-charge of Botany section of CBRTI Dr K Laxmi Rao, after thorough research on pollen grains, has prepared the capsules of bee pollens comprising the pollens of various plant species including coconut (50 per cent), sunflower (20 per cent), sesame (10 per cent) and mustard (20 per cent).

“The nutritious value of Indian Pollens is very high containing protein 65 per cent, 22 amino acids, lipids (fatty acida) 5 per cent and all ‘B’ group vitamins. We are promoting the capsules as nutritional substitute, particularly for children above three years of age and senior citizens. The dose is available as 250 mg and 500 mg colour-coated capsules, transparent capsules and tablets,” said Rao.

A Chyawanprash like product comprising 500 gm honey and 200 gm pollens has also been designed, especially for the children. Speaking on the results of the capsules, she said that already it had proven its health benefits among physically weak children.

Rencana jangka panjang akan mengembangkan “Integrated Bee Farming” dengan tanaman Sorghum untuk lebah madu, peternakan sapi/domba, pabrik bio etanol dan beras/tepung sorghum pengganti gandum yang 100% masih diimport. Khususnya di dalam rangka REKLAMASI Pertambangan dan pengembangan kepulauan dan pedesaan terpencil (Indonesia punya 17.500 pulau2, bagaimana membuat pulau2 kecil mandiri pangan, energy, daging/susu dan sehat berkat peternakan lebah madu ?)

3. Potensi lebah hutan Apis dorsata cukup tinggi. Dulu jaman HPH dan konversi hutan jadi perkebunan sawit dan banyak terjadi pembakaran hutan, illegal logging, sebagian besar koloni Apis dorsata punah ( Sumatera, Kalimantan). Kini setelah ditanam kembali HTI Acacia mangium dan Eucalyptus dan perkebunan sawit komunitas Apis dorsata berkembang lagi terutama di Riau, Sumsel , Jambi dan Sumut, dan banyak madu hutan dihasilkan dari daerah2 tersebut.

Dua tahun yl terjadi perubahan iklim yang mengakibatkan penurunan produksi madu samapai 20% dan banyak peternak Apis mellifera yang bangkrut dan tidak dapat memelihara lebahnya lagi karena hasil madu sedikit pengeluaran tinggi. Kalau tahun ini tidak ada perbaikan kemungkinan produksi lebah ternak semakin sedikit .

5. Madu palsu semakin marak beredar karena tidak ada pengawasan dari Pemerintah. Banyak pabrik madu palsu yang mengedarkan madu palsu dengan harga murah di pasaran Indonesia. Menurut survey trans TV dan Pusbahnas (Pusat Perlebahan Nasioanl) sekitar 80% madu di pasaran palsu. Hal ini sangat merugikan konsumen karena dengan mengkonsumsi madu palsu dapat meningkatkan gula darah bagi penderita diabetes, dan tidak ada tambahan gizi berupa vitamin, mineral, enzyme, anti oksidant, anti biotika dll yang terdapat pada madu asli.

6. Di luar Negari (Eropa dan USA) terjadi CCD (Colony Colapse Disorder) yang menyebabkan kematian lebah 40% /tahun sehingga produkasi madu juga menurun. Perubahan iklim juga di alami di Eropa yang juga berdampak pada penurunan produksi madu. Kondisi ini merupakan peluang bagi Negara Amerika Selatan (Brazil, Argentina, Meksiko) memasuki pasar madu USA dan Eropa. Apalagi madu China di band karena terlalu banyak mengandung logam berat.

7. Saya di Jerman mengikuti Kongres APITHERAPY Jerman yang diselenggarakan setiap tahun di kota Passau. Sudah 3 kali saya ikut sejak 2009 dan menjadi member German Apitherapy Society. ARTIKEL MADU UNTUK MAJALAH TRUBUS

PENGANTAR: Awal Mei 2011 saya meliput panen madu pelawan di hutan Bangka, Provinsi Bangka Belitung, yang rencananya akan dipublikasikan di Majalah Trubus edisi Juni 2011. Para “peternak” menerobos hutan, mencari lokasi yang tepat (antara lain daerah itu agak terang dibanding area di sekitarnya), dan memasang sunggau. Sunggau mirip gawang di lapangan sepak bola, hanya saja bagian horizontal agak miring. Di bagian itulah, lebah hutan Apis dorsata bersarang. Pemasangan sunggau 2—3 bulan sebelum musim bunga tiba. “Peternak” itu akan memanen madu, yang jumlahnya bervariasi, maksimal 11 kg per sarang.

1. Berapa jumlah koloni lebah yang Bapak budidayakan saat ini?
Bina Apiary Indonesia pernah mengelola 1000 koloni, tetapi overhead costnya terlalu tinggi, yakni untuk pindah2/migrasi dari Jawa Tengah ke Jawa Timur dan Jawa Barat, untuk beli gula pada saat paceklik tidak ada madu (musim hujan), untuk bayar peternak, sumbangan dan pungutan desa , keamanan dll, sehinga sekarang mengelola ternak inti 130 kotak (satu truk) sebagai peternakan INTI dengan membina plasma para peternak lain dan menampung hasil panen madu dengan pengawasan kwalita madu di lapangan waktu panen.

2. Apa jenis lebah yang Bapak budidayakan? Apis cerana, Apis mellifera?
Secara komersial Apis mellifera lebih menguntungkan karena produksi tinggi (30 kg/koloni/tahun) ; dapat menghasilkan bee pollen, royal jelly dan propolis. Sedang Apis cerana hanya penghasil madu dalam jumlah kecil ( 5 kg/koloni/tahun).

3. Berapa jumlah madu yang Bapak produksi per tahun dari total koloni itu?
Dari lebah kita sendiri sekitar 130×30 kg = 3900 kg dan dari peternak binaan/plasma sekitar 10 ton. Dari peternak lain dan madu hutan dapat mencapai 100 ton

4. Apakah pernah ada riset yang membandingkan antara madu dari lebah hutan dan madu hasil budidaya? Bagaimana hasilnya?
Belum pernah ada research di Indonesia yang membandingkan antara madu hutan dan madu hasil budidaya. Sedang madu budidaya juga ada banyak jenisnya al madu kapok randu, madu karet, madu lengkeng, madu kopi, madu rambutan, madu durian, madu sonokeling, madu jambu mete, madu mangga, madu duwet, madu multiflora, madu dadap, madu alpokat, madu kesambi, dll Tidak ada institusi di Indonesia yang punya dana dan tenaga untuk meneliti masing2 kandungan dan manfaat tiap jenis madu

5. Jika belum, menurut Bapak, adakah perbedaan mutu dan efikasi (khasiat) antara madu hasil budidaya dan madu hutan?
Mutu madu tergantung dari jenis tanaman dan keasliannya serta kadar air waktu panen. Madu budidaya rasa, warna, bau, mudah dibedakan karena lebih homogen, sedang madu hutan karena tidak dapat di identifikasi asal bunga tanaman (bercampur di huatn) agak susah mengenali bau, rasa, dan warnanya , kecuali yang jelas asalnya seperti madu Acacia mangium, pelawan . Kita sementara membedakan warnanya gelap, agak gelap dan kuning . Madu hutan sudah di sertifikasi JMHI (jarinagan Madu Hutan Indonesia) sebagai madu Organik oleh BIOCERT di Bogor. Dan telah di presentasikan di Kongres APIMONDIA (World Beekeepers Association) di Montpellier Perancis tahun 2009.

6. Saya memperhatikan sarang-sarang lebah di hutan. Pada umumnya serangga sosial itu membuat sarang di cabang primer yang posisinya miring 15 derajat. Mengapa?
Saya belum pernah meneliti atau memperoleh hasil penelitian ttg hal tsb. Akan saya tanyakan kepada pakar Biology atau Entomology. Tunngu jawaban menyusul

7. Di Bangka, sunggau yang dipasang di dalam hutan kadang-kadang tak dihuni lebah jika anatara lain di sekitar sunggau itu terdapat bangkai dengan bau menyengat. Mengapa lebah enggan bersarang di area yang terdapat bangkai?
Sebab ilmiah saya belum tahu. Tetapi lebah adalah machluk Tuhan yang selalu mengunjungi tempat bersih dan bau bangkai mengganggu indera lebah yang bersih. Lebah hanya terbang dari sarang mencari nectar, pollen, propolis dan air tidak pernah mampir2 ketempat yang kotor.

8. Apakah lebah-lebah cenderung mengumpulkan nektar dari satu jenis bunga atau dari beragam bunga?
Lebah mengumpul nectar berdasar kadar gulanya. Semakin rendah dan kadar airnya tinggi semakin kurang atau tidak dikunjungi. Jadi kalau ada sat jenis Bungan yang tinggi kadar gulanya akan di habiskan dulu baru mengunjungi jenis yang lain.

9. Madu pelawan (konon berasal dari nektar bunga pohon pelawan Tristania mainganyi) rasanya agak pahit. Mengapa madu pelawan pahit?
Nektar bunga pelawan rasanya pahit, sehingga madunya juga pahit.

10. Secara umum keberlangsungan hidup lebah sangat dipengaruhi oleh kualitas lingkungan hidup. Di Bangka penambangan timah sangat marak. Apakah hal itu mengancam kelangsungan hidup lebah? Mengapa?
Tambang di Bangka menghabisi tanaman penghasil nectar. Semakin luas tambang semakin sempit areal penghasil nectar dan otomatis semakin kecil produksi madu. Dalam rangka REKLAMASI tambang batubara di PT Antang gunung Meratus Kalsel dan PT BDMS Malinau Kaltim, saya kembangkan sorghum (bunga banyak polennya) dan tanaman Acacia mangium dan Kaliandra (penghasil madu), Disamping itu daun sorghum baik untuk makanan sapi/domba dan batangnya diperas untuk BIO ETANOL , biji/buahnya untuk pengganti gandum atau beras untuk manusia. Jadi pasca tambang batubara akan terbentuk lingkungan baru yang lebih tinggi nilai ekologis dan ekonomisnya. Masyarakat local tidak hanya menderita karena ditinggali banjir, sungai kotor, dan tanah gersang, sedang kekayaan tambangnya dinikmati orang luar /investor.

When bees are unable to carry a large amount of waste such as a dead mouse out of the hive, propolis can be used to isolate the carcass making it odorless and harmless. At or above room temperature, bee propolis is sticky but becomes hard and brittle at lower temperatures.

The composition of propolis varies by different seasons, locations, and hives. The chemical analysis of the composition shows that the propolis is a dependent on the vegetation available in the region where the hives are built. In northern temperate climates for example, propolis resins are made from trees such as poplars and conifers, which are rich in flavonoids, a type of antioxidant.

In addition, propolis contain other bee secretions with substances effective in fighting germs, bacteria and viruses. For instance, propolis from hives found in China contain chrysin, sinapic acid, isoferulic acid and caffeic acid, which demonstrate anti-bacterial properties.

Proplis is recommended mainly by traditional and natural medicine practitioners. It is believed to be able to act as an antimicrobial, an emollient, an immunomodulator, a dental anti-plaque agent, and an anti-tumor growth agent. Emollients are substances effective in treating skin burns.

Generally, propolis promotes the overall health of the heart, and the immune system and can provide relief for certain conditions including inflammations, viral diseases, ulcers, burns, wound infections and sore throats.

Propolis is manufactured into many forms and products including tablets, capsules, ointment, powder, extract, honey, chewing gum, food and beverages, cream, lotion and other cosmetics. When applying topically, caution should be exercised when applying propolis to the eye areas. Some people become more prone to developing allergies after repeated use of propolis.

HONEY DEFINED

The National Honey Board has taken on a daunting task, defining honey! It may come as a revelation to some that honey has had no official definition. On further reflection, however, it is not surprising. Imagine trying to come to grips with an adequate description of a natural product that is infinitely variable. After a year-long discussion with industry representatives and others, the Board’s Product Research and Development Committee has “…a document that describes and defines our product.”

The actual words used in the official definition were approved October 9, 1993 and are subject to review every two years: “Honey is the nectar and sweet deposits from plants as gathered, modified and stored in the honeycomb of honey bees.” That’s not all of course; several honey categories and other considerations are also discussed in the three-page definition document. These include honey composition, types of honey, designation of honey sources, forms of honey, honey products, grading and methods of analysis.

Composition of honey is perhaps the most problematic topic to deal with in defining the product. Given this fact, the Honey Board has chosen to list an average, range and standard deviation for major constituents. The standard deviation is an estimation of how variable each specific item is. The higher the number, the more difference that can be found among various kinds. The
standard deviations themselves show a large range from 70.9 (total protein is extremely variable) to 0.126 (fructose/glucose ratio is more consistent). The following are the actual numbers:

Although the percentage of fructose and glucose constituents are about the same in honeys, glucose is more variable with a standard deviation of 3.04 as opposed to fructose’s 1.77. Fructose is the major sugar component which provides the extreme sweetness in honey. This sugar also reduces possible crystallization in the product; Florida tupelo honey is well known for its high fructose content and tendency not to “sugar.” The percentage of sucrose in honey has a larger range than might be expected. Citrus honey from Florida has been rejected in some international markets because of its relatively high sucrose content, which is also thought to promote crystallization. Obviously, some honeys are much more proteinaceous than others. Perhaps this will result in some interesting claims by producers in response to the well-known declaration that honey is nothing more than carbohydrate!

Of all the numbers presented above, those with reference to percentage of water are perhaps most significant to honey judges. The standard for moisture content in honey shows has traditionally been 18.6%. Does the upper bound shown in the official definition (22.9%) mean that judges will have to accommodate honey in shows with what heretofore was considered an unacceptably high moisture content? In any case, this information will require changes in ENY 129 “Honey Judging and Standards” and ENY 130 “Moisture in Honey,” available from this office in limited supply. The official definition does incorporate current U.S. standards and grades of extracted and comb honey which are quoted at length in the above fact sheets.
